Heisman Watch

The star at the top remains Ashton Jeanty but the Heisman race is getting tighter in a year for running the darn football.

Heisman Leaders

1. Ashton Jeanty, Boise State, Running Back, Junior

Jeanty had 34 carries for 209 yards and three touchdowns in the Broncos win over Nevada. Boise State beat the Wolfpack in a game closer than anticipated and had Jeanty carry them to a 28-21 victory. Jeanty is still the clear Heisman favorite and his impact and Boise’s winning is why.

In 2024 he has 224 carries for 1,734 yards and 24 total touchdowns. If Boise wins the Mountain West and makes the playoffs and wins a game, Jeanty will still have a shot at Barry Sanders’ single season rushing records.

3. Dylan Sampson, Tennessee, Running Back, Junior

Dylan Sampson had 30 carries for 149 yards and a touchdown in the Vols win over Mississippi State. It’s been a good year for running backs with Jeanty, Sampson, Kaleb Johnson, and many more. Sampson, like Jeanty, is carrying his team on his back offensively.

He has 201 carries for 1,129 yards and 20 touchdowns. His 20 touchdowns are second in a single season by an SEC running back. Second only to Derrick Henry.

3. Travis Hunter, Colorado, Wide Receiver/ Cornerback, Junior

Hunter had a good game against Texas Tech with nine catches for 99 yards and a touchdown. This year he has 69 catches for 856 yards and nine touchdowns as a wide receiver. He has 20 tackles, seven passes defended, one forced fumble (that won a game in overtime), and two interceptions as a defensive back.

4. Cameron Ward, Miami, Quarterback, Senior

Hard to lay the loss to Georgia Tech at the feet of Ward since he went 25 of 39 for 348 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions. Ward will only have two regular-season games against Wake Forest and Syracuse left before the postseason, yet his Heisman hopes are still alive.

In 2024 he is 244 of 36 for 3,494 yards and 36 total touchdowns.

5. Bryson Daily, Army, Quarterback, Senior

Daily had a solid day against North Texas. He finished with 36 carries for 153 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Next week, against Notre Dame he’ll have a chance for his Heisman moment. Daily is responsible for 28 touchdowns for Army this year.

His incredible stats remain 174 carries for 1,062 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also is 29 of 51 for 644 yards and seven passing touchdowns. I don’t know if he can win the Heisman, but he should at least have the honor of being a finalist.
