Anthony Tandron, the minor league shortstop for the San Francisco Giants, received a 56-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
Major League Baseball announced the suspension on Friday, following a positive test under its new drug program for minor league players assigned outside the United States and Canada.
The Substance and Background
Tandron tested positive for boldenone, a banned substance known for its muscle-building properties. The 18-year-old shortstop, who signed for a $77,500 bonus in February 2023, had an impressive season during the 2023 Dominican Summer League, hitting .244 with 22 RBIs and five stolen bases in 45 games.
Collective Bargaining and Minor League Players
The minor league drug program now covers only players assigned to teams in the U.S. and Canada. However, because players in the Dominican Summer League (DSL) are outside the minor league bargaining unit, Major League Baseball (MLB) created a separate drug program for them.
