The Memphis Showboats had a tremendous turnover after a disappointing end to the 2024 season. The significant returning offensive players include WR Jonathan T. Adams, last year’s backup QB Troy Williams, and RB depth with Titus Sven. On the defensive side it includes John Adkins Sr, DT. He’s a stalwart Showboat, having even been on the Tampa Bay Bandits, the Showboats predecessor. Also back are DE Tyshun Render, and the star safety, Kyree Woods.
The Showboats open their season at home on March 30th. Simmons Bank Liberty Bowl will host the Michigan Panthers. They’re a strong squad, having advanced to the UFL championship last year, with the majority of their players returning. Breeland Sparks, DE, was all-UFL last year. Jarrett Horst was the offensive tackle that leads a good line, he started all 11 games last year. In a late-breaking surprise move, head coach Ken Whisenhut took a leave of absence for personal reasons. Only six days before the season, I’m sure this is a huge shock for a newly assembled team, especially since he also was the offensive coordinator. Showboats offensive line coach Jim Turner will serve as head coach in Whisenhunt’s absence. Turner has been an offensive line coach for the Miami Dolphins, Cincinatti Bengals, and the Texas A&M Aggies.
E.J. Perry will likely start at QB for the Showboats. This would make this a revenge game against his old team, the Panthers, who he started for last year the first four games. Play calling for this brand-new offense will be by TJ Viernes, the receivers coach, in consultation with coach Jim Turner. They’d better get it together quickly, as the strong Michigan defense returns 10 of 11 starters. Coach Mike Nolan has led the Panthers to the postseason the last two years. Broadcast for the game will be 12 Eastern on ESPN.
