Sergio Brown, a former NFL player, was in court for a hearing about the murder of his mother. He’s accused of killing her and was the last person seen with her before her tragic death a month ago.
Sergio Brown’s Background and Accusations
Sergio Brown, 35, lived with his 73-year-old mother in Maywood. He was deported from Mexico to the U.S. on October 7 and was returned to Illinois on Tuesday.
Brown is facing serious charges of first-degree murder and hiding evidence of the crime. At the hearing, Judge Molina-Gonzalez decided against releasing him before his next court date, set for November 22.
Murder Investigation
His mother, Myrtle Brown, was found near a creek in Maywood, which is about 12 miles west of Chicago. A medical examiner confirmed her death as a homicide and said she was injured during an assault.
Prosecutor’s Claims and Defense Arguments
In court, Brown appeared in casual clothing, handcuffed, and didn’t say much. The prosecutor pointed out that he was the last person seen with his mother and had been seen burning something on the night of her death, September 14. He then flew to Cancun the next morning, and charges on his credit card suggested he had rented two homes in Colombia before being deported.
Cell phone records revealed that Brown and his mother were near the same location at the time of her death.
The prosecutor mentioned DNA evidence, but Brown’s public defender argued that there was no direct evidence linking him to the crime, and it was all circumstantial.
Sergio Brown’s NFL Career
Brown has a background in football, attending Proviso East High School in Maywood and playing college football at Notre Dame. He went on to play in the NFL for teams like the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills until 2016.
