Early Thursday morning, authorities in Fairfax County, Virginia, reportedly arrested former NBA guard Delonte West. A jail official at the Fairfax County Detention Center confirmed that West faces misdemeanor charges for violating conditions of release and resisting arrest. Currently, he is held on a $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Background and NBA Career

West, who spent eight seasons in the NBA from 2004 through 2012, played for several teams including the Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Dallas Mavericks. Following his NBA career, West had stints with the G League’s Texas Legends and also played in China for Fujian Xunxing and the Shanghai Sharks. Unfortunately, West faced challenging times after his basketball career ended.

Personal Struggles and Comeback Attempts

In 2020, Mark Cuban, the owner of Mavericks, saw West panhandling at a gas station and picked him up. He offered to pay for West’s drug rehabilitation. West then secured a job at the Florida rehab center he attended. However, in October 2021, authorities arrested Delonte West for allegedly banging on the doors of a Florida police department, holding two open containers of alcohol, and cursing at officers.

In 2022, West tried out for the BIG3 three-on-three league in an attempt to make a basketball comeback, but the league didn’t sign him. He has been open about his diagnosis of bipolar disorder, which he received in 2008. During his college years, West played alongside NBA guard Jameer Nelson at Saint Joseph’s, leading the Hawks to a 30-2 record and an Elite Eight appearance in 2004.

Despite his struggles, Delonte West remains a notable figure in NBA history, both for his on-court contributions and his personal challenges. His story serves as a reminder of the complexities faced by professional athletes beyond their playing careers.
