Drake Maye’s rise from promising rookie to MVP frontrunner mirrors the New England Patriots’ stunning transformation this season. A franchise that slogged through back-to-back 4-13 campaigns now sits atop the NFL at 9-2, powered by Drake Maye’s poise, precision and growing command of the offense. Thursday night’s 27-14 win over the New York Jets was the latest reminder of how dramatically things have shifted in Foxborough, as the home crowd serenaded their young quarterback with chants of “MVP” while he guided the Patriots to their eighth straight victory.

Patriots’ Turnaround Accelerates Behind Maye’s Steady Play

Maye delivered another efficient performance, completing 25 of 34 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown without an interception. He began the night by completing his first 11 throws and continued to operate with the confidence and rhythm that have defined New England’s resurgence.

The Patriots are now just the fourth team in the last 25 years to start 9-2 after winning four or fewer games the previous season. Their eight-game winning streak is the longest in the league, and they’ve scored at least 20 points in every victory during the stretch.

Coach Mike Vrabel attributed the turnaround to Maye’s growth and the team’s discipline. “We have high expectations for Drake,” Vrabel said. “He’ll stay humble through all this, and he’ll keep improving. The only thing that stops us is us.”

A Historic Streak for a Young Quarterback

Over the past two decades, only Dak Prescott (2016), Carson Wentz (2017) and Lamar Jackson (2019) have matched Maye’s combination of early-career winning streak and offensive consistency. Maye has protected the ball far better than he did last season, throwing 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions while completing 71.8% of his passes.

Despite the individual praise and the MVP chants echoing around Gillette Stadium, Maye remained focused on the larger picture. “When you put the work in, and we have good players and coaches, you expect these results,” he said.

TreVeyon Henderson Delivers Breakout Performance

Rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson helped fuel the win with three touchdowns—two on the ground and one through the air—joining Rob Gronkowski and Sony Michel as the only Patriots rookies to ever score three times in a game. With Rhamondre Stevenson sidelined again, Henderson handled a career-high 19 carries and continued to build trust within the offense.

“Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke,” Maye said of Henderson’s growing role. “He wants to be great.”

Stefon Diggs also contributed, posting nine receptions for 105 yards—his third 100-yard performance of the season.

Defense Holds Firm Despite Jets’ Early Punch

The Jets opened the game with an impressive 72-yard touchdown drive—their first opening-drive TD since late last season—but couldn’t sustain momentum. Patriots defenders tightened up, limiting New York to 245 total yards and repeatedly stifling Justin Fields in the passing game.

Fields managed 116 passing yards and was forced to carry much of the offense with his legs, rushing for 67 yards and a score. Jets coach Aaron Glenn lamented the imbalance: “We can’t put Justin in the situation where he’s the running back.”

Late in the game, the Jets mounted one final push but came up short after Fields’ fourth-down pass at the New England 15-yard line was broken up with just over two minutes remaining.

Patriots Continue Their Unexpected Climb

With the win, New England is guaranteed its first winning season since 2021 and currently holds the NFL’s best record. As Vrabel’s culture takes root and Maye continues to play at an elite level, the Patriots have reentered the league’s upper tier far sooner than anyone anticipated.

And if the MVP chants are any indication, the fans know exactly who is leading the charge.
