Former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator, Joe Barry, wasted no time finding a new opportunity.
Less than two weeks after departing the Packers following three seasons, Barry will be joining the coaching staff of the Miami Dolphins, as confirmed by a source on Tuesday. Barry’s expertise will be focused on coaching linebackers, a return to his first coaching roots.
Packers Defensive Performance Recap
In his final season with the Packers, Barry’s defensive unit ranked 17th in yards allowed but showcased strength by holding the 10th position in points allowed. However, the team struggled in rushing defense, ranking 28th and 26th over the past two seasons.
The NFL Network was the first to break the news of Barry’s hiring by the Dolphins.
Campanile Moves to Packers as Linebackers Coach
Barry steps in to replace Anthony Campanile. According to reports from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Campanile is set to move to the Packers as their new linebackers coach.
Campanile had twice interviewed for the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator position, but his contract expired after the 2023 season.
Last week, the Dolphins hired former Baltimore Ravens defensive line coach and associate head coach, Anthony Weaver, as their new defensive coordinator, following the departure of Vic Fangio in January. Fangio later took on the role of defensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Campanile’s move is one of several changes within the Packers, who recently brought in Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley as their new defensive coordinator. Hafley is expected to bring along defensive line coach Vince Oghobaase from Boston College.
Retained Packers Coaches: Downard and Rebrovich
Reports from ESPN indicate that Hafley and head coach Matt LaFleur have chosen to retain Packers secondary coach Ryan Downard and pass-rush specialist Jason Rebrovich. However, the Packers allowed several coaches, including defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery, to explore other opportunities. Montgomery will be joining the New England Patriots as their defensive line coach, according to ESPN sources.
Among the departures from the Packers are inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti and passing game coordinator Greg Williams.
Derrick Ansley Joins Packers’ Defensive Staff
According to sources from ESPN, the Packers have finalized their defensive staff with the addition of former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley, who will serve as the team’s new defensive passing game coordinator. Ansley led the Chargers’ defense last season after spending two years as their defensive backs coach.
Future Additions to Packers’ Coaching Staff
The Packers may make further additions to their defensive coaching staff, but the core group is now in place. However, they still need to find a replacement for strength and conditioning coach Chris Gizzi, who was fired last month.
