1. The Washington Defenders are for real. A second straight win, a solid 17-12 victory over a totally rebuilt Memphis Showboats team. QB Jordan Ta’amu moved the team at times early during the game. However, only in the last drive did Ta-amu hit every open man and the running game gelled.
2. The Memphis Showboats continue their upward trend. The offensive side especially seemed to level up from game 1, as head coach (and play caller) Ken Whisenhunt returned. As opposed to their first game, this was a see-saw contest that was a heartbreakingly close game. The play calls seemed more varied and effective, and the offensive line meshed better in Week 2. With a full coaching staff O-line coach Turner confidently focused on just that unit. This game, the offensive line provided EJ Perry with a more secure pocket, and extra blockers frequently protected the backfield.
3. The UFL, and especially Audi Field in DC, famous for the Beer Snake, is a real vibe at night. The production tricks like on field interviews with players that just made a great play deliver great drama. My favorite moment was when they asked a backup QB, Dresser Winn, for the Showboats, “What’s the Play Call?” on 4th and 1. He replied deadpanned, “We’re gonna take a shot down the field.” Of course that didn’t happen!
4. DC had a solid offense, but their QB Ta’amu was erratic with his passes. Even when he connected, there were several notable drops. The running game saved them on several occasions, as the Defenders line dominated the Showboats.
5. The Showboats got better on offense, but EJ Perry still threw a pick. An abdominal issue hampered Perry, and he was wearing a large protective vest under the uniform. Jonathan Adams had a memorable day, with 123 receiving yards. His most impressive catch had to be reversed by booth review, as in real time it appeared impossible he touched both feet down in bounds (he did). Despite the loss by the Showboats, Memphis will have a chance next week against another winless team, the Houston Roughnecks.
