After the Chicago Bears lost to the Washington Commanders in week eight of the season, they followed that by dropping an absolute stink bomb in week nine. The Bears 27-9 loss was an absolute indictment of the Bears’ coaching staff. It really looks like Matt Eberflus has lost this team. That means it’s going to be a long 2024 season for the Bears.

Meanwhile, the Commanders under new head coach, Dan Quinn and rookie QB, Jayden Daniels sit at 7-2. Coaching really makes a difference.

Tyrique Stevenson’s gaffe was symptomatic of a deeper problem

By now we are all aware of the bone-headed play Stevenson committed on the last play of the Bears- Commanders game. The question as to how a player could be so oblivious to what was going on during the last play of the game is mind-numbing. The fact that Matt Eberflus didn’t realize the significance of the play before the Hail Mary pass is also an indictment of Ebderflus’ coaching ability.

After the Bears’ loss to the Commanders, Bears’ players weren’t shy about expressing what they thought about Ederflus’ game management. That’s not a good sign for Eberflus. Later in the week Bears’ players were more inclined not to be so vocal about criticism. Not because they felt differently, but because they had been told to tone it down.

What to make of Sunday’s Bears’ loss

The Bears were absolutely pathetic in their 29-9 loss to the Cardinals. They act like a team who have no confidence in their coaches. The offensive line play is horrific, and how does TE, Cole Kmet get zero targets?

Also, as the first half was winding down the Bears were down only 14-9. Then Emari Demercado broke off a 53-yard run with 12 seconds left in the first half to deliver the knockout blow to the Bears.

The Bears act like a team that has quit on their coach. And the sad thing is the McCaskey family will probably sit on their hands while another season goes down the drain. They’ve never fired a coach in season despite the desperate need to do so on many occasions.

It didn’t have to be this way

Much of the Bears’ media and fan base was beating the drum for a new head coach during the offseason. One of the guys available was Dan Quinn. I suspect that most Bears’s fans would love to see Dan Quinn at the helm as Bears’ head coach now.

If not Dan Quinn, there were any one of a number of qualified candidates. I wish Bears’ GM, Ryan Poles would explain why he didn’t hire one of them.

And while we are talking about Ryan Poles, could he please explain why the Bears’ offensive line is so bad?

If the Bears’ hold to form, Bears’ fans will be forced to watch Eberflus’ incompetence on display for the rest of the season, followed by his sacking.

And speaking of sacking, the Bears should be laser focused on improving the offensive line. Caleb Williams will do well to get through this season in one piece.
