Utah Tech stays hot, and the Wolverines and Utes also have big weekends!
Utah 9-5 (0-0 in the Big 12)
The Utes kept the momentum going from their win over Loyola Marymount with a big game on Friday. They opened their new home field with a 9-0 win over Grand Canyon. The Utes would get their third straight win on Saturday in a pitching duel, 1-0. The Utes would get their third straight shutout win on Sunday against Grand Canyon with a 3-0 victory. Utah would get their final victory earlier today, 7-2, and leave this week riding a five-game winning streak. Utah will continue their homestand this week when they start a series on Friday against the Arizona Wildcats to begin Big 12 play for the 2026 season. It’s an impressive week of baseball when you enter it 4-5, but leave it 9-5.
Utah Valley 9-7 (0-0 in the WAC)
The Wolverines did what they were supposed to against the Bears, starting with an 11-6 win on Friday. Saturday, the doubleheader against Northern Colorado got off to a rough start. Northern Colorado got their second win of the season in a decisive 14-3 win. But UVU didn’t stay down for long; they responded with an emphatic win of their own in the second game, crushing the Bears, 12-1. In game four on Sunday, Utah Valley won, 14-4. Earlier today, in their fifth game against Northern Colorado, the Wolverines won, 5-1. Utah Valley’s schedule takes an odd turn this week. They’ll play Colorado Mesa on Wednesday, but have no weekend series, but will play two games against the Cincinnati Bearcats next Monday and Tuesday.
BYU 6-8 (0-0 in the Big 12)
BYU’s home opening series against California Baptist didn’t go as the Cougars hoped. Despite the picturesque setting in Provo, the Cougars lost their first game in a shootout, 13-11. The second game wasn’t any better as they fell 14-7 on Friday. California Baptist would complete their sweep of BYU on Saturday, 11-7. Things don’t get better for BYU’s schedule either. Tomorrow, they welcome the Utah Tech Trailblazers to Provo, and then on Thursday, start a series against a rolling Big 12 foe in the Cincinnati Bearcats. At least the Cougars’ offense was present this past weekend, scoring 25 runs, despite being swept.
Utah Tech 13-3 (0-0 in the WAC)
Tech came into the week as the hottest team in the state. They looked like they’d keep their winning ways going when they won a 15-11 shootout with Austin Peay on Thursday. But Austin Peay took a doubleheader, defeating the Trailblazers 10-5 and 7-4 on Friday. In the final game of the series on Saturday, Utah Tech had to battle. In extra innings, Tech won in walk-off fashion and split their series against Austin Peay.
Utah Tech improved to 13-3 on the season. The Trailblazers will play at BYU tomorrow before heading to Southern California to play a three-game series against Santa Clara. The boys from St. George are the top team in Utah right now.
The Utah Four
- Utah Tech 13-3 (0-0 in the WAC)
- Utah 9-5 (0-0 in the Big 12)
- Utah Valley 9-7 (0-0 in the WAC)
- BYU 6-8 (0-0 in the Big 12)
Wally Joyner Player of the Week
This week, it’s players of the week, and it goes to the entire Utah Utes pitching rotation. Loyola Marymount and Grand Canyon aren’t the best of opponents, but what Utah did is still impressive. It doesn’t happen often in college baseball that a team will allow only six runs in five games and have three shutouts in that stretch. That’s what Utah did as they opened their 2026 season at home and at their new ballpark. Such a feat is noteworthy and special.
