Utah Tech has had the best opening month of all four of the baseball teams in the Beehive State!

Utah 5-5 (0-0 in the Big 12)

The U won two of three in their first two weekend series of the year. However, they stumbled in their series against UC Santa Barbara this past weekend. They lost the first game on Friday, 7-2 and followed it up with a 7-1 loss on Saturday. Utah fell to an ugly sweep with their 12-1 loss on Sunday against UC Santa Barbara; the Utes were outscored 26-4 in the series. They played one final game in Southern California today against Loyola Marymount. Utah got a much-needed win, 13-4. This week, they will be returning to Salt Lake City for their home-opening series against Grand Canyon, which begins this Friday.

Utah Valley 5-6 (0-0 in the WAC)

The Wolverines’ slump after their 2-0 start to the season has continued. Last week, they were swept by Nevada, and this week got off to bad start when they lost the first game of their series against UC Riverside, 10-9. That took their losing streak to six games heading into games two and three on Saturday in a doubleheader. Utah Valley would emphatically stop the bleeding with an 11-3 win followed by a 7-2 victory. The Wolverines’ 13-2 victory on Sunday gives them a three-game winning streak.

UVU will look to continue their rebound and winning streak when they host Northern Colorado this week for five games against the winless Bears in Orem. These will be some must win games for Utah Valley. This senior-heavy team has the chance to put together a special season, repeat as WAC Champions, and make the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.

BYU 6-5 (0-0 in the Big 12)

BYU continued their solid start to 2026 following their series split with Western Kentucky by winning two of their three games last week. This weekend they fell out of the gate, 10-7, to Long Beach State. They battle back to win two in a row over Washington State. They won the Battle of the Cougars 6-4 on Thursday and in walk-off fashion 5-4 on Friday. On Saturday, they wrapped up their two weeks in Southern California, trying to even things against Long Beach. BYU would ultimately come up short, falling 7-6.

This week, BYU will have their home opening season in Provo against Cal Baptist beginning on Thursday. The Cougars have been led this season by sophomore first baseman Ezra McNaughton. McNaughton’s 19 hits are second in the Big 12, and his 4 home runs are third. He also has 14 RBIs this season.

Utah Tech 11-1 (0-0 in the WAC)

Tech has had the best start to the season of any team in the state of Utah. They won five in a row to begin 2026, and won eight for their first nine games, including the first game of their series against Northern Colorado on Friday. Utah Tech took game one on Friday, 11-8. They followed it up with a Saturday doubleheader in which they won the first game, 6-5, and the second, 11-5. Tech finished the sweep and extended their winning streak to six games with a 6-4 win on Sunday. Utah Tech got that final win in dramatic fashion as Gavin Glasgow hit a wall-off grand slam to get the Trailblazers the win.

The Trailblazers will continue their opening homestand with a four-game series against Austin Peay that will start on Thursday. Utah Tech is off to a red-hot start and are positioning themselves to challenge for a WAC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. They’ll have to go through the defending champs and the in-state rival in Utah Valley. Their late April series in Orem is looming large right now.

The Utah Four

  1. Utah Tech 11-1 (0-0 in the WAC)
  2. BYU 6-5 (0-0 in the Big 12)
  3. Utah 5-5 (0-0 in the Big 12)
  4. Utah Valley 5-6 (0-0 in the WAC)

Wally Joyner Player of the Week

BYU’s Ezra McNaughton ran away with this award over the weekend. McNaughton had eight hits, a pair of home runs, and six RBIs in BYU’s four games in SoCal. The super sophomore first baseman has had a hot start for BYU and is playing as good baseball as anyone in the state of Utah right now.
