Many fans will be excited if the organization re-signs Pete Alonso before he hits free agency next offseason.

Hopefully new manager, Carlos Mendoza will have something to say about it this season.

Mets New Boss Behind the Bench with Pete Alonso

Mendoza previously served with the New York Yankees as Bench Coach under manager Aaron Boone. The 43-year-old is no stranger to the city and the game of baseball.

The native Venezuelan spent five years in the Yankees organization with Boone before moving on to the Mets.

This time Mendoza will be in Queens running his own show with the Mets and Alonso. While he will be facing his old boss in the Bronx with Aaron Judge.

This should set up for an exciting 2024 Subway Series.

Alonso and the Mets’ Transitional Year

While the Mets’ organization would like to have Alonso already signed, contract negotiations have been limited. Therefore, speculating no deal is coming soon. A bidding war could be in his near future.

Alonso wants to remain with the Mets for as long as he can. The three-time All-Star first baseman loves playing for the city and it feels like home.

“Honestly I love this city,” the 29-year-old slugger told the Foul Territory podcast. “I love playing as a Met…the personality of the guys in the clubhouse, the staff and the coaches. For me this is family and this is home, so I’m just sitting back and listening.”

Why the Mets’ Should Keep Alonso

Let’s face it, Alonso is the face of the Mets. He loves being in New York, and the fans love him being on the team. He’s is one of the most popular player’s that also produces for the team.

He is also on pace to break Darryl Strawberry’s team home run record, only being 60 behind. It would be difficult to see the Mets heading into contention by the 2025 season without Alonso on the team.

And what about ticket sales and merchandise? That would certainly lead to fewer sales and money for the team and league.

Alonso’s Stats

That being the case, with Alonso’s contract expiring in 2025, that leaves many questions about the talented player’s future.

While he had a .217 batting average, 46 home runs and 118 runs batted in last season, while hitting 192 home runs in his first 684 games played, he should be primed for a great 2024 season.

Let’s see if the Mets’ organization can step up sooner, rather than later to get a deal done.
