Game Breakdown
BYU vs West Virginia was less than exciting for Cougar fans. This loss showed the lack of strength and depth in certain positions. With BYU down their starting quarterback, half the defensive line, a linebacker, and two defensive backs they showed who they are when backups come in to play. This team was proud of their depth during training camp and yesterday it didn’t show what the coaches said they had seen during camp.
The Cougar offense did what they could to try and get points on the board but the play calling didn’t do them any good. Retzlaff was calm and collected and that was also why BYU finally put points on the board. The Defense still can’t stop the run this season and that has to change to win another game this season.
Studs
Max Tooley LB
Tooley was back to himself yesterday with 12 tackles and he led the defense during the game. He showed some bursts of life yesterday while trying to stop the run.
Jake Retzlaff QB
Jake Retzlaff was 24/42 for 210 yards. He led the offense on and off the field while showing off his arm talent. Retzlaff was also good at running the ball when needed. He will need to understand when not to stay in the pocket trust his legs and also work on his touch on the ball. Other than that he had a great game.
Ryan Rehkow P
Rehkow was the star of the special teams once again. This week he had four punts for 181 yards with three inside the 20-yard line.
Duds
Offensive line
They have struggled to block for the run all season and yesterday, they couldn’t keep anyone out of the backfield to save their lives.
Defensive line
This line was not who BYU had seen all season long. With injuries piling up and them getting run over by the run game, it was an ugly game for this line. They will need to work on depth and getting a couple of starters back to look like they did during the first couple of games.
Jakob Robinson CB
Jakob Robinson couldn’t block anyone last night and every time he had a chance he gave it up. He had four tackles last night.
