Game breakdown
BYU vs TCU was a huge loss for the Cougars. The biggest in Big 12 history for the Cougars and puts them at 4-2 in the 2023 season. BYU’s offense didn’t see any improvements from this game and only made themselves look worse. The run game had 91 total yards yesterday with only showing some bursts of life during the season. It has had its ups and downs and yesterday it put up some decent yards on the year. BYU’s passing game was showing life before the bye week and yesterday it sucked. It only put up 152 yards and no touchdowns. The Cougar defense gave TCU too many chances yesterday to throw the ball deep and put it in the endzone. They struggled to play in the red zone and keep TCU behind the 50-yard line.
Studs
Eddie Heckard CB
Heckard didn’t have many tackles but he was seen doing work to keep BYU in the game in the first half. He had two tackles, one pass deflection, and one interception. Heckard was keeping his blocking tight and did keep the receivers working yesterday.
Ryan Rehkow P
Ryan Rehkow had another big day he had seven punts for 313 yards. His long was 60, three that were 50 or more yards, and two inside the 20. Rehkow has been one of the most consistent players all season and tried to help the defense out by pinning TCU deep.
Miles Davis RB
Davis was seen in a big role as a backup running back yesterday against the Horned Frogs. He had 10 rushes for 47 yards. Davis had some big plays last year in the second half of the season so maybe he can do it again this year for the Cougars.
Duds
Kedon Slovis QB
Kedon Slovis has to figure out how to get the ball out faster and make plays when necessary to keep the offense on the field. He was 15/34 for 152 yards, and one interception he also rushed for -20 yards. There were many times when he had time to throw the ball and he didn’t. He has to trust his wide receivers to make plays but he also has to not overthrow them on every other play.
Isaac Rex TE
Rex wasn’t seen much yesterday he had one target for one yard and didn’t block much yesterday. He needs to have big games for BYU to win and yesterday it showed that he needed to be targeted more.
LJ Martin RB
LJ Martin is a freshman so he won’t always have a good game. Yesterday he struggled to help the run game get going he rushed for 58 yards on 14 attempts. For him to get back to the line of scrimmage was an accomplishment.
Max Tooley LB
Tooley the leader of the linebackers with Bywater out struggled to make plays. He had six tackles and that was it.
