The Buffalo Bills continued shaping Joe Brady’s first coaching staff by agreeing to hire longtime NFL assistant Pete Carmichael as offensive coordinator. The move adds a veteran voice to a staff led by one of the league’s youngest head coaches while maintaining continuity for a Josh Allen–led offense that Brady will continue to run.
A Familiar Partnership Reunites in Buffalo
Carmichael and Brady share a professional history that dates back to New Orleans. Carmichael served as the Saints’ offensive coordinator when Brady worked as an offensive assistant from 2017 to 2018, Brady’s first stop in the NFL. That overlap helped shape Brady’s offensive philosophy, one he has previously credited to Sean Payton’s system, where Carmichael spent more than a decade coordinating some of the league’s most productive offenses.
Now reunited in Buffalo, the dynamic is clear. Brady will retain play-calling duties, while Carmichael provides structure, experience, and a steady hand in game planning and weekly preparation.
Carmichael’s Resume Brings Stability
Carmichael arrives with more than two decades of NFL coaching experience, including a long run as the Saints’ offensive coordinator from 2009 through 2023. During that span, New Orleans consistently ranked among the league’s top offenses and helped redefine modern passing concepts.
Most recently, Carmichael served as a senior offensive assistant with the Denver Broncos under Payton. His departure follows a broader reshuffling of Denver’s offensive staff, opening the door for him to take on a prominent role in Buffalo.
Brady’s Vision for His Coaching Staff
Brady emphasized that diversity of coaching styles, not familiarity, drives his hiring decisions. During his introductory press conference, he made it clear he wants a staff built on complementary strengths rather than personal relationships. Carmichael fits that vision as a calm, detail-oriented coach with a proven track record and no need to control the offense.
Brady also confirmed that he and Josh Allen have remained aligned throughout the process, particularly in shaping the offensive staff and quarterback room. That collaboration played a role in bringing in someone Allen can trust while still allowing Brady to evolve as a head coach.
More Work Ahead for Buffalo
Carmichael is the first coordinator to join Brady’s staff, but several key vacancies remain. The Bills still need to hire a defensive coordinator after Bobby Babich departed for Green Bay, along with a new special teams coordinator following Chris Tabor’s exit.
For now, Buffalo has secured a crucial piece. By pairing Brady’s modern offensive approach with Carmichael’s institutional knowledge and experience, the Bills are betting that balance — not reinvention — will keep them among the AFC’s elite.
