This week, the Buffalo Bills had the opportunity to sign three new players to their roster. Two of them hail from Spring football.
Currently, 54 UFL players have signed with NFL teams. Most are blessed to have another opportunity to play in the NFL.
Here are the three new players added to their roster.
Ben DiNucci
The Bills signed quarterback Ben DiNucci after third-string quarterback Shane Buechele suffered a neck injury in their preseason opener.
Buechele is expected to be out long-term, and there isn’t a timetable for his return.
DiNucci, known to his fans as “Gucci” DiNucci will bring his past XFL success and strive to learn the playbook as quickly as possible.
Additionally, DiNucci is a fast learner. He rushed from the golf course to One Bills Drive to sign a one-year contract with the Bills.
Before entering the XFL, DiNucci began in the NFL in 2020 with the Dallas Cowboys. The 27-year-old made one start in his rookie year on SNF, losing 23-9 to the Philadelphia Eagles.
After being out of the league and looking to revive his career, DiNucci entered the XFL 3.0 in 2023.
The Seattle Sea Dragons drafted him on November 15, 2022.
DiNucci went 7-3 in the regular season while leading the league in passing yards, completions, and attempts.
That led his team to the XFL North Division finals.
His successful season earned him a camp invite with Sean Peyton and the Denver Broncos. Therefore, his preseason efforts landed him on the Broncos practice squad.
DiNucci did not see any regular season action in 2023 and hoped to make the Broncos roster this season. Nevertheless, the Broncos waived the quarterback.
The 6′ 2″, 222 lb. signal-caller now has a chance to begin his NFL career with another clean slate.
Maybe this time fate will tell him that his new home is with the Buffalo Bills.
Deon Cain
The Bills signed WR Deon Cain as their second signing in just one week. Like DiNucci, Cain played in the USFL and the UFL with the Birmingham Stallions.
Cain signed a one-year deal and is looking to make the Bills roster, most likely as a kick returner.
He will definitely succeed with the new hybrid kickoff rules inspired by the XFL.
The 28-year-old brings speed and significant playability after the catch and also can showcase his speed in kickoff and punt returns.
He mainly did that during his USFL Championship game MVP season in 2023 with the Stallions.
While he did not run the MVP back in 2024, he was instrumental in helping the Stallions win three straight Spring football championships.
After two failed stints with the Philadelphia Eagles, Cain hopes all this well-earned production in Spring football earns him the right NFL landing spot with the Buffalo Bills.
Damiere Byrd is the Word
The Buffalo Bills’ final signing of the week was WR/KR Damiere Byrd. Byrd is very fast, running a 4.28 40 time on his pro day.
Byrd is already familiar with Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane.
The speedy athlete played for the Carolina Panthers after being signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2015 NFL draft.
McDermott was the DC then, and Beane was the Panthers’s assistant GM.
In his three years in Charlotte, Byrd reeled in 12 catches for 129 yards and two TDs.
He also participated in the return game, running back 12 punts for 113 yards and racking up 294 yards and 10 kicks for a score.
After some other stints with NFL teams, Byrd’s best year came during the 2020 COVID season, where he started in 14 of 16 games for the New England Patriots.
He caught 47 passes for 604 yards.
We’ll see where he ends up, but it could be either another return specialist spot on the 53-man roster or a practice squad spot.
Nevertheless, the Bills added three new players to their roster just this week.
Let’s hope they find their replacements to fill the voided roles.
