Boston celebrated in style as the Celtics captured their record-breaking 18th NBA championship, solidifying their status as basketball royalty and on June 21, 2024, the city was awash in green and white as fans gathered for the iconic duck boat parade, a tradition synonymous with Boston’s sports supremacy.
The Parade Route and Festivities
The celebration kicked off at TD Garden at 11 a.m., with a vibrant procession winding through the city’s heart. The parade route took fans from Causeway Street, past City Hall, through Boston Common, down Boylston Street, and concluded at the Hynes Convention Center. Moreover, along the way, throngs of fans cheered, waved signs, and reveled in the team’s victory.
A Tradition of Champions
This championship parade was the 13th this century for major sports teams of Boston, including the Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox, and Bruins. The celebration repurposed the duck boats, which carried players, coaches, and family members through the jubilant streets.
Highlights of the Parade
All-Star Jayson Tatum, holding the Larry O’Brien Trophy, was a focal point of the parade. During a pre-parade rally, he shared his excitement, saying, “It’s unbelievable. It still doesn’t seem true. But just trying to stay in the moment.” The Celtics owner, Wyc Grousbeck, also made a memorable entrance, walking down Causeway Street with the trophy and the newly made 2024 championship banner after being blocked by traffic.
Fans’ Dedication and Celebration
Fans from near and far flocked to the event, with some traveling great distances to witness the historic celebration. Moreover, Jason Hawkins, a dedicated Celtics fan, drove from Ohio to be part of the festivities, proudly proclaiming he had touched the championship trophy.
Unity and Team Spirit
Coach Joe Mazzulla, who had been instrumental in the team’s success, emphasized unity throughout the season. Additionally, the team’s mantra, “Together,” was echoed by players like Jaylen Brown, who highlighted the collective effort required to achieve their goal.
