In a season full of indignities, the Chicago White Sox were spared the indignity of having the longest losing streak in the history of MLB. The Sox were able to stop their losing streak at 21 with a 5-1 win over the Oakland A’s. The victory provides a temporary respite from the misery that has been the 2024 White Sox season.
Sox starting pitcher, Jonathan Cannon went six innings, giving up only a solo home run to Zack Gelof. In summary, Cannon gave up six hits and two walks while striking out And, in a shocking development, Dominic Leone, Chad Kuhl and John Brebbia each threw a scoreless inning in relief.
As for the offense, Andrew Benintendi struck the big blow, a two-run homer in the fourth inning. He also doubled and scored in the ninth.
What should the team’s goals be going forward?
Simply stated, the team should try to avoid having the worst record in the history of MLB. In addition, the team should see if there are any usable parts going into the 2025 season.
As a bonus, it would be nice if Sox owner, Jerry Reinsdorf, would pop his head out of his bunker and take responsibility for the steaming pile of a baseball team he’s responsible for. Plus, an indication he would be willing to pry open his wallet to actually pay for some actual talent. Both on and off the field.
Combing through the rubble
Luis Robert Jr. is allegedly the White Sox super star. Well, he’s hitting .211 with an OPS of .698. Hopefully, he’s underperforming. I hate to think that’s who he really is. I suspect he needs a change of atmosphere to produce. That seems like a project for the next White Sox manager.
Benintendi has been better as of late. When I’ve seen some Sox games, he frankly seemed almost disinterested. He used to be a pretty decent player. After getting to Chicago, he turned into a pumpkin. It would seem that there’s a better version of Andrew Benintendi. The next manager should try to get that version of Benintendi on board.
Edgar Quero seems to be the best hitter in the Sox system. In a limited sample size at Charlotte, he has an OPS of 1.022. Brooks Baldwin is already with the big-league team and has shown some offensive potential. He tore it up in both AA and AAA before being promoted to Chicago.
And, of course, the Sox starting pitchers are something to keep an eye on. It’s not much, but I’m trying to throw White Sox fans a bone.
