In a whirlwind week, Bill Belichick engaged with the Atlanta Falcons, marking his second interview with the team.
Falcons’ Coaching Search Progress
After parting ways with Arthur Smith on Jan. 8, the Falcons are actively seeking a new head coach, and Belichick stands out as the first candidate to undergo two interviews for the position, concluding his second session on Friday.
Belichick’s Coaching Legacy
The 71-year-old coaching veteran, recently separating from the New England Patriots after an illustrious 24-season tenure, 17 AFC East titles, and six Super Bowl victories, is navigating a pivotal moment in his career.
Notably, one of Belichick’s Super Bowl triumphs was at the expense of the Falcons in Super Bowl LI. The Patriots orchestrated a historic comeback, overcoming a 28-3 deficit to clinch a 34-28 victory in overtime. His most recent Super Bowl win was against the Los Angeles Rams at Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta.
Belichick holds the third spot on the regular-season wins list with 302, following George Halas (318) and Don Shula (328). Additionally, he secures the second position on the all-time wins list with 333, trailing only Shula’s 347. The coach already boasts the NFL record for the most postseason wins at 31.
Belichick’s coaching tenure spans 467 games, ranking him third in NFL history, following Shula (490) and Halas (497). He shares the record for the most losses by an NFL head coach (165) with Dan Reeves and Jeff Fisher. His coaching record includes a 302-165 regular-season performance and a 31-13 playoff record, surpassing Andy Reid, who holds the second position with 23 playoff wins.
Other Coaching Candidates
The Falcons’ coaching search isn’t exclusive to Belichick. Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn participated in a virtual interview on Friday. The Falcons have also interviewed several other candidates, including Baltimore defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald and assistant head coach Anthony Weaver, Cincinnati offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, San Francisco defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, Carolina defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, Philadelphia offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, and University of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.
Sources indicate that the Falcons are also expected to interview former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel on Wednesday. Currently employed coaches are mandated to undergo virtual interviews until Monday, after which in-person interviews become feasible for candidates whose seasons have concluded.
