About the time I think the Chicago White Sox can’t get any worse they find more ways to embarrass themselves. Not only did the Sox lose to the Milwaukee Brewers to make it 11 losses in a row, their arguably best hitter and announcer managed to make themselves the butts of jokes.
The Sox were losing 4-3 in the top of the eighth inning when Tommy Phan was sent from third on a short flyball to left field. Brewers’ left fielder, Christian Yelich, is not known for having a great arm, but easily threw Pham out at the plate. And then things got interesting.
We’ll start with Tommy Pham
Pham was basically sent on a suicide mission with predictable results. One of the unusual aspects of the play was the route Pham took to home plate. Pham was so far up the line it was unclear if he was trying to score or attack the mound. Well, that’s a slight exaggeration, but he was a way up the line.
In fairness to Tommy, the Sox haven’t made it all the way around the bases very often so it’s not like the team has blazed a trail around the bases.
Still, having a baserunner look like a four-year-old running the bases in a tee ball game isn’t a good look for an allegedly major league team.
When Pham did eventually get to the plate, he tried to plow through Brewers’ catcher, William “I have the right number of Ls in my name” Contreras. Conteras didn’t budge and Pham became upset about something the Brewers did in celebration.
Or maybe it was the fact he was sent on a flyball he had almost no chance to score on.
Pham was so upset you would have thought that someone had cheated in his fantasy football team.
Tommy did reiterate that he is Tommy Pham after the game saying, “There’s a reason why I do all kinds of fighting in the offseason.” To paraphrase the rest of the rant, Tommy said he did it to mess somebody up.
Based on past history, that somebody could be on Tommy’s team or the other team. Put a volatile guy on a bad team and you get stuff like this.
But White Sox announcer, John Schriffen, is an even bigger punchline
After the Pham dustup, Schriffen had an interesting take saying something like no matter how many Ls we have we ain’t going to take that. So, who is this “we” he speeds of? And what is “that” that the mysterious “we” aren’t going to take? But that’s not the first odd take John has spouted.
John opined that the White Sox were catching other teams at bad times. The insinuation being that the Sox were catching the other teams when they were hot. Yeah, that’s the problem. The remark even made Sox non punchline color guy Steve Stone chuckle.
As I think about it John Schriffen is probably the perfect play by play guy for this White Sox team. Steve Stone is out of place.
