Patriots Release Jabrill Peppers: Veteran Safety Cut in Surprise Move Ahead of Season Opener

In a surprising roster shake-up just over a week before their season opener, the New England Patriots have released veteran safety Jabrill Peppers, according to multiple reports. The 29-year-old was expected to start in the secondary alongside Jaylinn Hawkins but will instead hit the open market after two seasons in Foxborough.

The decision comes just 13 months after the Patriots signed Peppers to a three-year, $24 million extension in July 2024. Cutting him now offers little financial relief, since the team has already locked in more than $4 million of his salary. The move highlights yet another questionable contract handed out by the previous front office regime led by Eliot Wolf and Jerod Mayo.

From Captain to Cut

Peppers carved out a leadership role in New England and earned a team captain role in 2024. His season hit a halt last October when the Commissioner’s Exempt List sidelined him after an arrest on charges of domestic violence and cocaine possession. A court cleared him of all charges, and he returned to the field after missing seven games.

After his reinstatement, Peppers suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined him for the final three games of the year. He still finished the season with 40 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one interception. The year prior, in 2023, he logged a career-high two interceptions while starting 15 games for the Patriots.

Despite his track record, new head coach Mike Vrabel and his staff opted to move on, signaling a commitment to a younger, less experienced defensive backfield. Hawkins is now expected to start alongside rookie Craig Woodson, who impressed during training camp.

A Broader Roster Overhaul

Peppers’ release is part of a sweeping roster overhaul under Vrabel. The team also cut guard Jack Conley from the practice squad, claimed rookie defensive tackle Eric Gregory off waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals, and signed former Raiders offensive tackle Thayer Munford Jr. to the practice squad.

The decision to part ways with Peppers stands out, however, given his role and veteran presence. It also underscores the dramatic changes to the team’s leadership core: of the six captains from the 2024 season — Peppers, David Andrews, Ja’Whaun Bentley, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Cardona, and Deatrich Wise Jr. — none remain with the team.

A Winding Career Path

A first-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2017, Peppers spent two seasons in Cleveland before the Browns shipped him to the New York Giants in the blockbuster deal that sent Odell Beckham Jr. and Olivier Vernon their way.

He played three seasons in New York before signing with the Patriots in 2022, where he initially found stability and success in their defense.

Now, with the Patriots choosing youth over veteran experience, Peppers will look to continue his career elsewhere as the 2025 season approaches.
