Jake Retzlaff will withdraw from BYU after an off-the-field incident involving an honor code violation. Early this year, a woman from the Salt Lake Valley accused Jake Retzlaff of assault and battery in a civil case. On June 30th, she made these allegations, and from then on, Retzlaff has never looked back. All of this occurred back in 2023, so for it to come out two years later is kind of fishy, especially after the year both BYU and Utah had in the Big 12. Below is the timeline of events according to multiple sources, and also what BYU chose to do. It will also contain all the truth and not any rumors what what BYU may have done because the school never stated that they suspended him for any games or that he would transfer before Retzlaff made his statement on July 11th, 2025.

The Timeline

This timeline was pulled from several articles, as not all of them contained all of the events due to when they were published. This all started back when Jake Retzlaff first joined the Cougars in 2023 and then had consensual sex with this young woman in November of that year. Retzlaff stated that ” a lawyer representing Retzlaff denied those allegations but said Retzlaff had consensual sex with the woman.” This statement from Retzlaff’s lawyer came out just days before the case was dismissed. From November of 2023 to February of 2024, the two texted back and forth until they stopped in February.

Just one year later, on May 21st of 2025, the young women came out and accused Jake Retzlaff of assault and battery relating to the events that occurred in November of 2023, and also had a civil suit started to try and get some money out of him. After fighting in court and accusing the Provo Police Department of ignoring her, the case was dropped. After that, there were rumors flying around about suspension, transfer, and other things, and none of them were true. On June 30th of 2025, the case was closed. On July 11th, Jake Retzlaff announced that he is withdrawing from BYU to explore other schools following these events.

Years at BYU

Jake Retzlaff only played in two seasons for the Cougars and started in one of those years. In his 2024 season, he came in for Kedon Slovis and finished the season. During that year, he played in three games and had 63 completions, 648 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Last year, Retzlaff was on fire and led the Cougars to an 11-2 season. He played in all 13 games and had 213 completions for 2947 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Retzlaff was on record for another great season with the Cougars before all this occurred, so now the Cougars will turn to one of the other quarterbacks on their roster.
