Veteran defenseman Matt Dumba has retired from the NHL after 13 seasons with five franchises, ending a career that included 748 regular-season games and the 2020 King Clancy Memorial Trophy.
The 32-year-old most recently played for the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2025-26 season. The NHL Players Association confirmed his retirement Friday in a social media post, recognizing his career and his contributions on and off the ice.
Dumba finished his NHL career with 85 goals and 176 assists for 261 points. He also recorded five goals and 10 assists in 54 playoff appearances.
Dumba Spent 10 Seasons With Minnesota Wild
The Minnesota Wild selected Dumba with the seventh overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut during the 2013-14 season and spent the first 10 seasons of his career with Minnesota, recording 236 points in 598 games.
Dumba established himself as an offensive-minded defenseman, reaching his career highs in goals, assists and points during the 2017-18 season. He finished that campaign with 14 goals and 36 assists for 50 points in 82 games.
His contributions extended beyond the ice. Dumba received the 2020 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, an annual award recognizing a player who demonstrates leadership and makes significant humanitarian contributions to his community.
He also served as an alternate captain during the final two seasons of his Minnesota tenure before leaving the organization in 2023.
Defenseman Played For Four More Franchises
Dumba signed with the Arizona Coyotes as a free agent in 2023 before moving to the Tampa Bay Lightning near the 2024 trade deadline. He appeared in the playoffs with Tampa Bay that spring, marking his final postseason run.
He joined the Dallas Stars ahead of the 2024-25 season but saw limited action late in the campaign. Dallas subsequently traded him to Pittsburgh, where he spent the final season of his NHL career.
Dumba appeared in 11 games for the Penguins in 2025-26, recording one goal and two assists. He spent most of the season with Pittsburgh’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, before his NHL contract ended in April.
Dumba Leaves Behind 748 NHL Games
Across his time with Minnesota, Arizona, Tampa Bay, Dallas and Pittsburgh, Dumba accumulated 261 points in 748 regular-season games. He added 15 points in 54 playoff appearances, with most of those postseason games coming during his years with the Wild.
Although injuries and reduced playing time affected the later stages of his career, Dumba leaves the NHL with more than a decade of experience and recognition for his leadership and community work.
His retirement closes the career of a former first-round pick who spent 13 NHL seasons competing across five franchises.
