The Arizona Cardinals opened training camp Thursday with four players on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, including edge rusher Josh Sweat, whose absence came as a surprise after missing the team’s offseason program.
Joining Sweat on the PUP list are left tackle Paris Johnson Jr., defensive back Garrett Williams and tight end Tip Reiman.
Josh Sweat Expected to Return Soon
Sweat is dealing with a knee issue after finishing last season with an ankle and knee injury. Despite recording a career-high 12 sacks in 2025, he did not participate in organized team activities or minicamp practices this offseason, though the team previously said his absence did not stem from an injury.
Head coach Mike LaFleur downplayed the concern, saying Sweat’s placement on the PUP list is largely precautionary.
“Seeing him yesterday, he’s fired up to be here,” LaFleur said. “He’s in great spirits. He looks really good.”
LaFleur added that the Cardinals likely would not have placed Montez Sweat on the PUP list if they had begun training camp a week later and said the veteran pass rusher could make his camp debut as early as next Tuesday.
Paris Johnson Jr. Also Held Out for Maintenance
Johnson’s appearance on the PUP list came as another surprise after he participated during the offseason program.
The Cardinals coach described the offensive tackle’s situation as routine maintenance following the knee injury that landed him on injured reserve late last season.
“The Paris thing, that is honestly nothing. It’s really just maintenance. He’ll be back before you know it.”
Williams and Reiman Continue Recoveries
Garrett Williams remains sidelined as he recovers from the Achilles injury he suffered last December, while Tip Reiman continues to work back from the ankle injury that ended his rookie season in Week 5.
Although none of the four players practiced on Thursday, the Cardinals expect all of them to return during training camp.
Arizona officially opens on-field preparations with hopes of having its key contributors available well before the start of the regular season.
