The Milwaukee Brewers strengthened their pitching staff ahead of the trade deadline by acquiring right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. and left-hander Colton Gordon from the Houston Astros in exchange for minor league outfielder Jadyn Fielder.

The deal gives Milwaukee additional rotation depth as it sits atop the National League Central, while Houston gains payroll flexibility and a young position player with notable baseball lineage.

Brewers Add Rotation Depth Amid Injuries

The Milwaukee Brewers entered the All-Star break with one of baseball’s best pitching staffs, but injuries have recently hit the rotation hard.

Two-time All-Star Brandon Woodruff continues to recover from a shoulder injury, while left-hander Kyle Harrison is also on the injured list with forearm tightness.

Lance McCullers Jr., who waived his no-trade clause to complete the deal, could provide experienced depth once he returns from his current rehab assignment for a rotator cuff impingement.

The 32-year-old is 2-3 with a 6.51 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 55⅓ innings this season after returning from multiple injury-plagued years.

Gordon, 27, gives the Brewers another controllable pitching option. The left-hander has made four appearances this season, including one start, and remains under team control through 2028.

Astros Create Payroll and Roster Flexibility

Houston general manager Dana Brown said the trade was designed to create flexibility without signaling a step back in the club’s postseason ambitions.

“Make no mistakes, we are still trying to improve this team,” Brown said. “We are still actively talking about acquiring a left-hand bat.”

The Astros will pay more than $4.2 million of McCullers’ remaining salary, leaving Milwaukee responsible for roughly $2.5 million.

Brown added that McCullers’ path to innings had become more difficult with injured starters expected to return later this season.

McCullers Ends Long Astros Tenure

The move closes a lengthy chapter for Lance McCullers Jr., who spent his entire major league career with the Houston Astros after the Astros selected him in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft.

A two-time World Series champion and 2017 All-Star, McCullers owns a career 53-40 record with a 3.85 ERA and 904 strikeouts across 148 starts. Injuries have repeatedly interrupted his career, including Tommy John surgery and multiple arm setbacks that cost him more than two full seasons.

Houston Acquires Prince Fielder’s Son

In return, the Astros receive 21-year-old outfielder Jadyn Fielder, the son of six-time All-Star Prince Fielder and grandson of former MLB slugger Cecil Fielder.

Fielder is batting .233 with three home runs, 23 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in Class-A this season.

Brown praised the young prospect’s potential while acknowledging his famous family background.

“Most likely will play the outfield, although he’s played some first base and second base,” Brown said. “Good bloodlines, of course. It’s an opportunity to acquire a young bat.”

With the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaching, Houston indicated it remains active in the market, while Milwaukee continues reinforcing a roster with postseason aspirations.
