Jazz Chisholm Jr. exited the New York Yankees’ 5-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday after a foul ball took an unfortunate bounce and struck him in the groin area.
The injury occurred in the fourth inning when Chisholm fouled off a knuckle-curve from White Sox right-hander Sean Burke. The ball bounced off the dirt and ricocheted directly into Chisholm, causing the second baseman to collapse in obvious pain.
Manager Aaron Boone and a trainer quickly attended to Chisholm, who remained on the ground for several minutes before getting up and slowly walking off the field.
Anthony Volpe Takes Over Mid-At-Bat
With Jazz Chisholm Jr. unable to continue, Anthony Volpe entered as a pinch hitter with a 2-2 count. Volpe drew a walk, but the defense caught him stealing second base to end the inning.
Later in the game, Volpe doubled but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.
Chisholm’s departure came during a difficult offensive night for the Yankees, who managed just five hits. The White Sox avoided a series sweep thanks to a pinch-hit grand slam from former Yankee Andrew Benintendi off reliever Camilo Doval in the eighth inning.
Yankees Continue Battling Injuries
Injuries have already hit the New York Yankees hard this season. Three-time AL MVP Aaron Judge continues to recover from a rib injury, while slugger Giancarlo Stanton is dealing with a calf issue. Center fielder Trent Grisham is also on the injured list because of a hamstring injury.
Fortunately for the Yankees, Jazz Chisholm Jr. could return quickly. The 28-year-old rejoined the lineup for Friday’s game.
Chisholm entered Thursday batting .228 with 10 home runs and a .720 OPS in 70 games. After a difficult start to the season, he had begun to heat up, hitting .271 with six home runs and a .903 OPS over his previous 26 contests.
His quick return offers some relief for a Yankees club already navigating several significant injuries as it tries to maintain its position atop the American League East.
