The Atlanta Falcons addressed a growing need along their offensive line Thursday by acquiring offensive tackle Wanya Morris from the Kansas City Chiefs in a draft-pick swap.

According to reports, Atlanta received Morris and a 2027 seventh-round pick while sending a 2027 sixth-round selection to Kansas City. The move strengthens a tackle group that has faced several offseason questions following roster changes and injuries.

Atlanta Responds to Tackle Concerns

The Falcons entered the offseason searching for additional protection on the edge after veteran right tackle Kaleb McGary unexpectedly retired. The position carries added importance for Atlanta’s offense, which currently features left-handed quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. competing for the starting role.

With new head coach Kevin Stefanski and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees expected to incorporate more under-center concepts, dependable tackle play becomes even more critical.

Atlanta already signed former Chiefs tackle Jawaan Taylor in free agency, but Taylor has not participated in organized team activities for undisclosed reasons. Meanwhile, Michael Jerrell has handled many of the first-team reps during offseason practices.

The Falcons’ need for reinforcements increased further when veteran swing tackle Storm Norton was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list as he continues recovering from ankle surgery.

Morris Brings Starting Experience

A third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, Morris appeared in 16 starts during his three seasons in Kansas City. His most extensive action came in 2024 when he started 11 games at left tackle during the Chiefs’ run to a 15-win season.

Known for his physical run blocking and versatility, Morris initially showed promise as a developmental starter. He later carved out a role as a swing tackle capable of filling in on either side of the offensive line.

However, injuries and inconsistency eventually affected his standing in Kansas City’s plans. During the latter stages of the 2024 season, the Chiefs moved All-Pro guard Joe Thuney to tackle in an effort to better protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Last season, Morris returned to a reserve role before suffering a season-ending knee injury on the opening snap of his first start against the Houston Texans in December.

Chiefs Clear a Crowded Depth Chart

Morris entered training camp facing an uphill battle for playing time in Kansas City. He had slipped behind several younger options on the depth chart, including veteran addition Jaylon Moore and developmental prospects Chukwuebuka Godrick, Esa Pole and rookie Kahlil Benson.

The Chiefs’ confidence in their emerging tackle group made Morris expendable, allowing the organization to gain additional draft capital while opening opportunities for younger players.

For Atlanta, the move represents a low-risk investment in a 25-year-old lineman with starting experience and developmental upside. If Morris can regain his form and stay healthy, he could provide valuable depth and potentially compete for a larger role as the Falcons reshape their offensive line heading into the 2026 season.
