The Kansas City Chiefs have once again demonstrated their commitment to Patrick Mahomes, agreeing to a reworked contract that keeps the superstar quarterback in Kansas City through the 2033 season. The revised agreement, worth $504.75 million, becomes the first NFL contract to surpass the half-billion-dollar mark and further solidifies Mahomes’ place as the centerpiece of one of the league’s most successful franchises.

The deal adds two years to Mahomes’ previous contract and includes $239.05 million in new money. Beginning in 2027, the agreement carries an average annual value of $64 million, setting a new NFL benchmark for quarterback compensation. The first four years are fully guaranteed at signing, while mechanisms built into the contract ensure the entire $504.75 million eventually becomes guaranteed.

Chiefs Continue Investing In Their Franchise Quarterback

The latest extension marks the third time in six years that Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have redefined the quarterback market. Equity Sports CEO Chris Cabott and Chiefs general manager Brett Veach finalized the negotiations, continuing a partnership that has shaped each of Mahomes’ major contract restructures.

Including previous adjustments, Kansas City has now committed $689.05 million in new money to Mahomes between 2022 and 2033. The organization views the investment as essential to maintaining its championship aspirations after reaching five Super Bowls and capturing three titles during Mahomes’ tenure as the starting quarterback.

Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt praised Mahomes’ impact both on and off the field, calling him a generational talent whose leadership has elevated the franchise’s profile worldwide.

Record Deal Reflects A Changing Quarterback Market

Mahomes entered the NFL in 2017 on a four-year rookie contract worth $16.4 million. Three years later, he signed a groundbreaking 10-year, $450 million extension that was considered unprecedented at the time.

Since then, quarterback salaries have continued to rise across the league, prompting Kansas City to revisit the structure of Mahomes’ deal. The updated contract not only keeps pace with the market but also establishes a new standard, with incentives and escalators pushing the maximum value to $522.25 million.

The agreement reinforces Mahomes’ status as one of the NFL’s most valuable players while providing long-term financial certainty for both sides.

Kansas City Remains Confident In Mahomes’ Recovery

The extension arrives as Mahomes continues recovering from a serious knee injury suffered late in the 2025 season. The quarterback tore both his ACL and LCL in December and underwent surgery shortly afterward, ending his campaign prematurely.

Despite the setback, the Kansas City Chiefs have maintained confidence that Patrick Mahomes will be available for the start of the 2026 season. The NFL will open Kansas City’s season against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football, and the organization has repeatedly expressed optimism regarding his rehabilitation progress.

By committing to Mahomes through 2033, the Chiefs have made it clear they expect their franchise quarterback to remain the driving force behind the team’s pursuit of future championships for years to come.
