BYU of Provo, Utah, beats Texas Tech (Media by BYU Athletics)
The college baseball season in the state of Utah in 2026 comes to a quiet end
Utah 26-25 (12-18 in the Big 12)
The Utah Utes’ postseason was over almost as soon as it began. Utah played Kansas State in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament. Despite having a 3-0 lead after the first five innings, the Utes would falter down the stretch. The game would be tied, 5-5, heading into the final two innings, and Kansas State would rise to the occasion while the Utes did not. The Wildcats would get the 9-5 over the Utes to close out Utah’s season.
BYU 28-28 (14-16 in the Big 12)
The Cougars fared better in Arizona than their rivals from Salt Lake City. BYU would play Texas Tech on Wednesday. The Cougars would bring some momentum from last week, and they would smoke the Red Raiders. BYU defeated Texas Tech 18-8 and earned a run-rule victory in the Big 12 Tournament.
After defeating Texas Tech, BYU would face off against Baylor on Thursday. Despite falling behind 5-0 early in the game, BYU kept battling. The Cougars roared back and took an 8-6 lead going into the sixth inning. Unfortunately, BYU ran out of gas, but Baylor didn’t. Baylor would score seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings, and BYU would get one in the ninth for a final score of 13-9. Winning 28 games in a season is respectable and shows that BYU will continue to compete in the Big 12 going forward.
Utah Tech 35-24 (10-8 in the WAC)
Utah Tech was the last team in the state alive this week. They opened the WAC Tournament with a 4-0 shutout victory over UT Arlington. Round two saw them play Cal Baptist, who had the best overall record of any team in the WAC. It wasn’t a blowout, but Utah Tech still fell, 10-7. With the loss, Tech found themselves having to play a doubleheader. The second half of their two games on Thursday was against Abilene Christian.
It was a tight contest against ACU, but Tech pulled off the 6-5 win to avoid elimination. That took them to play Sacramento State on Friday. The Trailblazers lost 5-3, ending their time in the WAC and their 2026 season. Still, there’s no doubt that Utah Tech had the best season of any team in the state this year. They struggled when playing BYU and Utah head-to-head, but they were the only team to finish with their overall and conference records above .500.
Utah Valley 18-36 (4-14 in the WAC)
UVU’s season had concluded last week.
While some great baseball was played in the Beehive State in 2026, none of Utah’s four teams will be represented in the 2026 college baseball tournament. Utah, BYU, and Utah Tech all showed that the state of their programs and of college baseball in Utah is swinging for the fences.
