Reds Place Eugenio Suárez on Injured List With Oblique Strain

The Cincinnati Reds will be without a key middle-of-the-order presence after placing Eugenio Suárez on the 10-day injured list with a mild left oblique strain.

Manager Terry Francona said the injury occurred during batting practice, when Suárez felt discomfort on his final swing. An MRI later confirmed the low-grade strain, prompting the team to act cautiously.

The IL stint is retroactive, and while there’s optimism around a relatively quick recovery, the Reds plan to reassess after several days before ramping him back up.

Short-Term Impact on the Lineup

Suárez, who returned to Cincinnati on a one-year deal this offseason, had been hitting .231 with three home runs and 11 RBIs across 25 games. While those numbers aren’t eye-popping, his presence still adds needed experience and power potential to a lineup built around younger pieces like Elly De La Cruz.

His absence opens the door for multiple players to step in rather than a one-for-one replacement. Francona hinted at a flexible approach, mixing and matching depending on matchups and scheduling.

Opportunities for Others to Step Up

Nathaniel Lowe immediately made his case, stepping in as designated hitter and delivering two home runs—including a walk-off blast—in Friday’s win over the Detroit Tigers.

The Reds also recalled JJ Bleday from Triple-A, adding another bat into the mix as they navigate Suárez’s absence. Additional roster moves included pitching adjustments, signaling a broader effort to maintain depth during this stretch

A Manageable Setback, For Now

Oblique injuries can be tricky, especially for hitters, but early indications suggest this is a mild case. If Suárez responds well over the next several days, Cincinnati could have him back sooner rather than later.

Until then, the Reds will rely on internal depth and recent momentum—including clutch performances like Lowe’s—to keep things moving in the right direction.
