The second week of the season was just as good as the first in college basketball across the state of Utah! Here’s how the Beehive State’s teams did!

BYU 3-1 (0-0 in the Big 12)

The Cougars played Delaware on Tuesday night and found themselves in a very competitive game against the 0-2 Blue Hens at halftime. Kevin Young’s squad stopped sleepwalking and put the hammer down in the second half for an 85-68 victory. BYU then flew to the East Coast to take on UConn in TD Garden, home of the Boston Celtics. Early, it looked like UConn was going to run BYU out of the gym. Kevin Young’s squad fought back, however, and gave as good as they could without winning. BYU fell 86-84. This week, the Cougars play Wisconsin in Vivint Arena.

Utah 4-0 (0-0 in the Big 12)

The Utes started the week off with an 87-69 win over Holy Cross. They followed that up with an 85-79 win over Sam Houston on Saturday. This week, Utah will host Purdue-Fort Wayne on Tuesday and Cal-Poly on Thursday. Terrence Brown has been the Utes’ leading scorer and was again this week with 21 against Holy Cross and 26 against Sam Houston.

Utah State 4-0 (0-0 in the Mountain West)

USU got a win on Wednesday when they beat one of their in-state opponents. They defeated Weber State, 83-73. They then played UTEP on Saturday, coming away with a 75-51 victory. This week, the Aggies have only one game. On Friday, they’ll play Tulane and try to start the season 5-0.

Utah Valley 2-2 (0-0 in the WAC)

UVU got a home win on Wednesday. They beat Westminster (UT), 91-60. Utah Valley then went on the road and played at Fresno State. It was a hard-fought game that ended in heartbreak for the Wolverines in the form of a 75-74 loss. They only have one game this week, and it’s on Wednesday against UC Irvine.

Weber State 1-3 (0-0 in the Big Sky)

Weber lost their second game to an in-state rival in as many games. They fell to Utah State, 83-73. Their road trip then took them to UC Irvine on the West Coast. The Wildcats were defeated 79-70. This week, they’ll be back at home. On Wednesday, they’ll play Campbell, and on Saturday, they’ll play UT Arlington.

Utah Tech 3-4 (0-0 in the WAC)

The Trailblazers suffered a difficult loss on Wednesday, falling to Manhattan, 79-75. Things got a little better for Tech, though. They got a win over Mississippi Valley State on Friday, 81-75. On Sunday, they played Hawaii and fell to the Rainbow Warriors, 68-62. This week, Tech will play Nobel on Friday.

Southern Utah 1-3 (0-0 in the WAC)

The Thunderbirds would win their game on Tuesday night against Bethesda, 118-60. They then went on the road to play Omaha and were defeated 90-85. This week they have three games. First, they play at Gonzaga tonight, at Washington State on Wednesday, and at home against Nobel on Saturday.

Jimmer Fredette-Keith Van Horn Player of the Week

Utah’s Terrence Brown had another big week, as did Gary Clark of Utah State, and BYU’s Big Three of AJ Dybantsa, Richie Saunders, and Rob Wright III all had great games. I went with Terrence Brown again for leading Utah to a 4-0 start and for averaging 23.8 points per game in those four wins.
