Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle turned a lighthearted celebration into a viral moment — and a fine from the NFL. Following his third-quarter touchdown in Sunday’s 16–13 upset of the Green Bay Packers, Dowdle broke out a “two-pump” pelvic thrust tribute to the classic Key & Peele “Hingle McCringleberry” sketch. The celebration cost him $14,491 and drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that pushed back the Panthers’ extra-point attempt, which they missed.

Dowdle confirmed the fine on Wednesday night on social media, joking that the NFL had “disagreed” with the number of thrusts. His agent, David Canter, announced they will be appeal the fine.

Dowdle Turns Viral Moment Into Charity Effort

Rather than dwell on the penalty, Dowdle decided to use the moment for good. He launched a GoFundMe campaign with proceeds directed to the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina, an organization that provides adoption, foster care, and family preservation services.

“After much thought, I’ve launched a GoFundMe for my fines,” Dowdle wrote on X. “Key said I got three pumps but I guess the NFL disagrees. Actually, I’ll send 100% of the money raised through this fundraiser to the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina. Let’s raise some money.”

Dowdle’s charitable response earned praise from fans, with many applauding his sense of humor and generosity.

‘You Got Robbed’: Keegan-Michael Key Responds

The moment quickly drew attention from Key & Peele co-creator Keegan-Michael Key, who made the original sketch nearly a decade ago. In the comedy bit, officials penalize fictional wide receiver Hingle McCringleberry only for a third pelvic thrust — implying that two were acceptable.

“Rico! Man, you got robbed — you only did two pumps,” Key said in a social media post. “I’m sorry, man. Now I’m gonna have to write a new sketch.”

Even Panthers head coach Dave Canales joked about the situation afterward, saying, “We might have to call up Keegan-Michael Key for clarification. But from what I understand, any kind of movement that way will get flagged. We’ve got to be smarter about that.”

Dowdle Expected to Play Through Minor Injury

Dowdle, the NFL’s third-leading rusher this season, missed Wednesday’s practice with a quad injury unrelated to the celebration. Coach Canales downplayed the concern, saying the team expects Dowdle to suit up Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.

No other Panthers players involved in the celebration were fined. For Dowdle, the play — and its aftermath — may go down as one of the most memorable touchdown celebrations of the season, blending humor, controversy, and heart.
