For the first time in his NFL career, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is eligible for a long-term contract extension. Both Purdy and the team appear eager to strike a deal quickly, ensuring he remains the franchise’s cornerstone quarterback for years to come.

General Manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have already expressed their confidence in Purdy, highlighting his contributions to the team. “I think what we know about Brock is that he’s our guy.” Lynch said. “We have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time. He’s done so much for our organization; he’s won big games and had a little tougher task as we all did this year with some of the things that happened throughout the course of the year. We just never could string games where we were all together and through that, he continued to lead, he continued to play at a high level, so we have every interest in him being around. “We’ll have some time here in the coming weeks to sit together and put our whole plan together. That’s obviously a priority, that position, and we’ll give it that attention.”

A Significant Raise on the Horizon

Drafted as the final pick in 2022, Purdy has been playing on an economical rookie contract, averaging $934,253 annually. His current deal runs through 2025, with a cap hit of $1.119 million next season. However, the 49ers are prepared to offer a new contract that reflects his value, likely placing him among the league’s top earners.

While specific figures are still unknown, Purdy remains focused on striking a balance between personal and team needs. “More than anything for me, I want to be able to handle business the right way and do it in a respectable manner and get back to my team as fast as I can to get going,” Purdy said. “That’s my mindset, my focus. And obviously I want to help the team across the board with all the other guys who need to get their deals done, but everybody will handle it the right way and how they need to.”

Purdy’s Performance Amid Adversity

Purdy’s 2024 season was challenging as injuries plagued the 49ers’ offense. Key players like Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Williams, George Kittle, and Deebo Samuel Sr. missed significant time. Despite these setbacks, Purdy finished seventh in the NFL in QBR (68.0), 10th in passing yards (3,864) and third in yards per attempt (8.5) in his 15 games.

However, the team struggled to a 6-11 record, with Purdy unable to deliver in some late-game situations. His touchdown-to-interception ratio dropped to 1.7, a noticeable decline from 2023’s 2.8.

Despite the team’s struggles, Shanahan’s confidence in Purdy only grew. “Brock is the leader of our team,” Shanahan said. “I’ve loved these three years with Brock. I plan on being with Brock here the whole time I’m here. Brock’s been a stud. He’s a guy I’ve got a lot of confidence in just as a human, but it starts with what he’s done on the field these last two and a half years. We’re capable of winning the Super Bowl with him. He just almost did, and I know he’s capable of getting the Niners a Super Bowl in the future.”

The Push for a Quick Agreement

Contract talks with Purdy have not officially started, as the team is wrapping up evaluations following the season. However, the 49ers are likely to move quickly, knowing how essential Purdy’s extension is to their offseason plans.

A new deal would come with a significant raise, impacting how the 49ers manage their salary cap for roster improvements or player retention. Additionally, the team wants Purdy available for spring practices and training camp, avoiding any disruptions in his preparation.

Shanahan and Lynch handled high-profile deals before, such as finalizing Jimmy Garoppolo’s five-year, $137.5 million contract in early February 2018.

Although Purdy’s situation is different—since he’s under contract for another year—the urgency to complete the deal remains.

Purdy’s Commitment to San Francisco

Purdy has made it clear he wants to stay with the 49ers long-term. “I want to be in San Francisco and play my football career here,” he said. “I love it here and I want to do whatever it takes to be here. … I’m not really sure what it all is going to look like or entail, but I know that I’m the guy for this organization and that I can do what it takes to help lead us where we want to go.”

With both sides eager to reach an agreement, the focus now shifts to finalizing the details and securing Purdy as the 49ers’ franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future.
