Monday night was another of a serious of gut punches to Chicago sports fans. The Cubs lost to the Giants 5-4, with the bullpen giving up a 4-2 lead in the ninth inning. This was after the hitters once again repeatedly failed to hit with men on base. In summation, the present for Chicago sports fans generally stinks.
Beyond the Bears, the other pro sports franchises hype the future. I’m reminded of the words of Andy Dufresne to his friend, Red,” Remember, hope is a good thing, maybe the best thing.’ Especially when you’re trying to deflect attention for present failures. Against that backdrop, here are ten questions for Chicago sports franchises.
1: What is the White Sox expected haul for Luis Robert Jr.
While awesomely talented Robert Jr. is injury prone and is currently hitting under .200 with an OPS of .768. Just what is that worth in the market?
2: Will the Blackhawks get Connor Bedard a skilled linemate?
What Bedard accomplished in his rookie season was amazing. And that was with very little talent around him. At some point, if Bedard doesn’t get some talent around him, frustration could set in. The Hawks have a ton of cap room. It would be nice if they used it.
3: How do the Bulls get out of basketball Purgatory?
The Bulls’ best player is DeMar DeRozan. He’s 34 years old. Their highest paid player is Zach LeVine. And the Bulls played better without him. If they trade him, they will get pennies on the dollar.
4: Who catches the most passes for the Bears this season?
The Bears have the best offensive weapons I’ve seen on their roster in my lifetime. Their wideout trio D. J. Moore. Keenan Allen and rookie Rome Odunze all have the potential to lead the team. Plus, free agent RB, DeAndre Swift is also an excellent receiver. Finally, something for a Chicago sports fan to look forward to.
5: When do the Cubs actually try to win?
Maybe last year was their best shot, and they missed it. There has been regression on the part of a lot of their key players. This season is sliding away. Will the Cubs go all in for 2025?
6: Will the White Sox ever get any outside direction, or will they continue to rely on the voices that got them?
It reminds me of the saying, “What do you do when you find yourself in a hole? Stop digging.” Which would mean fire Chris Getz.
7: Will the Bears sign another edge rusher to compliment Montez Sweat?
I think they will, as they have a little cap space and seem to be the one franchise in Chicago trying to win.
8: Will the Blackhawks trade some of their myriads of draft picks for some immediate help?
While the Hawks should be players in free agency based on their cap space, if they really put the pedal to the metal, they might aspire to mediocrity this season.
9: Will the White Sox sell off a lot of assets and risk exceeding the 1962 Mets total of 120 losses?
Does Jerry Reisndorf really want that as his legacy? It would be fitting, I’m just not sure Jerry wants that to be his swan song.
10: Will this be the year the Bulls finally part ways with Lonzo Ball?
There seems to be some indication that Ball may be able to play this season, but this situation has a Derrick Rose feel to it.
