Despite one year left of eligibility, Penn State running back, Trey Potts, is declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft. The 2023 season was the first one Potts spent with the Nittany Lions after transferring from Minnesota. Here is a look back at Potts’ collegiate career, and what the draft will look like for him.

Trey Potts Collegiate Career

Potts spent four years with the Minnesota Golden Gophers before transferring to Penn State as a grad transfer. Potts does have one more year of eligibility but is choosing to forgo the sixth year to pursue his dreams of playing in the NFL. The Nittany Lions have both running backs, Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton set to return next year, which would give Potts limited playing time, similar to this past season.

In his five years, Potts has 264 rushing attempts for 1,350 yards and 13 touchdowns, according to Sports Reference. He has also had 13 receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown. His best season was in 2021 with the Gophers when he reached 552 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

2023 Season

With Singleton and Allen both on the Nittany Lions roster, it is difficult for Potts to get a ton of reps. He did get a chance this year, and he took the opportunity and played well. At the beginning of the season, Allen did miss some time which helped Potts. When the team had high-scoring games, it was another time Potts had an opportunity to get reps. This season, Potts rushed the ball 25 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns. He also had four receptions for 57 yards and one touchdown.

Trey Potts Draft Projection

Right now, it can be projected that Potts is a late-round pick, and definitely would be picked up as an undrafted free agent if he falls. A team could use him, as when he is on the field he is a clutch player. The limited snaps in 2023 lower his draft stock though. Depth at the running back position is always important and hopefully, Potts will get the opportunity to raise his draft stock. He is a player that when given the opportunity will show why he belongs out on the field. It will be interesting to see what team he ends up playing for in the league.
